College invites employers to build the future, together

Northamptonshire’s construction sector is facing a familiar challenge. Demand for skilled workers remains high, projects continue to grow in scale and complexity, and businesses are under increasing pressure to attract and retain talent with the right skills.

Against this backdrop, Northampton College is strengthening its commitment to supporting employers and developing the workforce of the future through a range of new Skills Bootcamps, work placement opportunities and industry partnerships designed to respond directly to the needs of local businesses.

The college has successfully secured funding from West Northamptonshire Council to deliver a series of Skills Bootcamps through to March 2027, helping adults aged 19 and over gain industry-relevant skills and move quickly into employment.

The programmes include Entry to Construction, incorporating CSCS Green Cards, Green Skills, Welding for Construction and ESOL in Warehousing. The college is also partnering with SIMIAN Risk to deliver a Skills Bootcamp focused on Entry into Scaffolding.

These short, intensive courses have been specifically designed to address skills shortages while creating a direct pathway into employment for learners and a valuable recruitment pipeline
for employers.

Jason Lancaster, Principal of Northampton College, believes employer involvement is critical to the success of the initiative.

He said: “Colleges have an important role to play in developing skills, but the most successful programmes are those that are shaped and supported by employers.

“These Skills Bootcamps have been designed to respond directly to workforce needs across construction, engineering, logistics and green industries. By working closely with businesses, we can ensure learners gain the skills employers are looking for while helping companies access motivated individuals who are ready to enter the workforce.”

The Skills Bootcamps form part of a wider employer engagement strategy that recognises the importance of collaboration between education and industry.

Success is measured not only by learners completing their training, but also by their progression into interviews, employment and sustained careers. Northampton College is seeking employers willing to offer interview opportunities, provide insight into current and future skills requirements and help shape training provision to reflect real-world industry demands.

For employers facing recruitment challenges, the benefits are clear. Rather than competing for a limited pool of experienced workers, businesses have the opportunity to influence the development of new talent and create a pipeline of candidates equipped with the practical skills, industry knowledge and work-ready attitudes needed to succeed.

Alongside the Skills Bootcamps, Northampton College is also expanding opportunities for employers to engage through industry placements and workforce development initiatives.

Construction businesses can support T Level Industry Placements, providing students with valuable workplace experience through substantial placements delivered over two years. Funding is available to support employers participating in the programme.

The college is also introducing new three-week construction placements for Level 2 and Level 3 learners who will already hold CSCS cards, providing employers with an accessible way to engage with emerging talent while helping students gain practical site experience.

Another area of focus is the Teacher Industry Exchange programme, funded through the Construction Training and Education Centre (CTEC). The initiative enables employers to host teaching staff for industry upskilling opportunities, deliver masterclasses and technical workshops, and contribute directly to curriculum enrichment activities.

Mark Bradshaw, curriculum manager for construction at Northampton College, said these partnerships create value for both education providers and employers.

He added: “The pace of change across construction, sustainability and emerging technologies means it is more important than ever for education and industry to work together.

“Employer engagement helps ensure our curriculum remains relevant, while businesses benefit from access to future talent and opportunities to influence skills development. Ultimately, these partnerships strengthen the local economy and help create sustainable growth across Northamptonshire.”

To launch the new programmes and encourage greater collaboration, Northampton College is hosting its Skills Bootcamps and Employer Engagement Launch Event on Tuesday, July 7 at its Booth Lane campus.

The event will bring together employers, HR professionals, workforce development leaders and industry partners to explore recruitment challenges, discuss future skills requirements and identify practical ways to work together.

Attendees will gain an overview of the Skills Bootcamp delivery model, take part in employer roundtable discussions and learn more about opportunities to engage with training programmes, industry placements and workforce development initiatives.

The launch event is just one of several opportunities for businesses to connect with Northampton College over the coming months.

The college has also announced its partnership with FixFest 2026, the UK’s dedicated festival for tradespeople and their families, which will take place at Delapré Abbey in Northampton on Saturday, July 11.

Combining a major trade exhibition with live music, networking opportunities, product demonstrations and family entertainment, FixFest has quickly established itself as one of the most exciting events in the construction and trades calendar.

Louis Timpany, CEO and Founder of Fix Radio and FixFest, said: “We’re incredibly proud to be partnering with Northampton College for FixFest 2026, the local college to our new event home in Northampton.

“As the UK’s festival for tradespeople, we believe it’s important not only to celebrate the industry we have today, but also to invest in and engage with the people who will shape its future.

“Northampton College plays a pivotal role in developing the next generation of skilled professionals. FixFest is all about bringing the industry together, and by working with Northampton College, we’re creating a platform that inspires future talent, showcases the breadth of opportunities available in the trades, and helps ensure the sector has the skilled workforce it needs for years to come.”

Employers attending FixFest are encouraged to visit the Northampton College stand to discover how they can support Skills Bootcamps, offer industry placements, engage with curriculum development and access emerging talent.
