Manufacturer ingrained with a passion for wood

Over the past 100 years, Scotts of Thrapston has built up a proud reputation as a high-quality Northamptonshire manufacturer that turns timber into desirable products.

It has been at the forefront of stable and summerhouse manufacture for around seven decades, with both products firmly at the top of people’s wish lists.

Other products include garages, pavilions, education and community buildings, while the company also has a healthy reputation with housebuilders, supplying trusses, engineered flooring, door porches and car barns.

During lockdown, many people have reconnected with their homes and enjoyed spending time there. They are now looking at more ways to enjoy their garden, take up hobbies and work from home. Therefore, it is no coincidence that the company’s summerhouse order books are in a stronger position now than this time last year, despite the cancellation of major national shows, such as the RHS Chelsea Flower Show.

As Scotts marks its centenary, it is also looking to the future with continual investment, helping to consolidate the next 100 years. Following the recent installation of a new CNC Router, the firm is making further machinery investments within the factory in 2020 to improve productivity.

Managing Director James Scott said: “We are a company ingrained with a passion for the beauty of wood and have seen our product portfolio grow and develop.

“For any company to last as long as we have, it is essential to embrace modern technology which, for us, has seen us continually produce attractive, innovative products.

“We understand timber, we are used to working with it. The continuation of merging new technology with traditional craftsmanship to produce products that stand the test of time will help the business not only survive but thrive into the next 100 years.”

The family business was founded by James Scott in 1920, before Douglas Scott took over the reins, with the business now run by the third and fourth generations, chairman David Scott and his son James. That longevity can also be seen in its loyal staff.

The company currently has around 90 employees who have served approximately 900 years between them. Members of staff in the factory have notched up a staggering 540 years of employment at Scotts.

David said: “We pride ourselves on being a family business, but it is our loyal employees who are the real heart of this company. They have honed their craftsmanship over many years and those skills can be seen, not only in our fabulous products, but in the reputation that we have built.”
