The Podcast > Episode 17 | Celebrating women in business

In this episode, we celebrate international women’s day by looking at women in business with Jasmine Mbye, Founder of The Like Me CIC, Rachel Adams, Partner at DFA Law and Samantha Bradford, Founder of Simplicity Financial Planning.

The ladies bring a collective insight into their experiences as women in business as well as their passion for wanting to help young people with their futures.

The Mask & Being a Woman In a Man’s World

We begin by touching on the idea of ‘the mask’: a concept talked about by Jasmine in her popular Ted talk episode that encompasses the feeling women in business experience of having to be something that other people think you should be, including the societal pressures to behave a certain way despite this not being a true reflection of who they are. We debate whether the mask is a good or a bad thing and whether it has the ability to be both.

The ladies discuss the feeling of being a woman in a ‘man’s world’ as well as how working from home during the pandemic made way for a better work life balance by forcing an honest view of the lives of the people behind the business. Samantha talks us through navigating a mother daughter working relationship and all of the ladies share the importance of educating young people to choose a career path based on what makes them happy and how they try to instil this in their own daughters.

We talk about whether going to university is still the make or break in the modern working world and how far women have come in the world of work and education across only 2 or 3 generations. Our guests share stories from their careers.

The conversation takes many twists and turns and covers an array of topics, ending with our guests giving advice to any young women starting out in their careers.
